PLUS ULTRA .: Sound and its unusual consequences
When I entered into the world of sonic creation, I did it without realizing it, unconsciously and even naively. In teenage years, when the virus of music had settled in me, I never raised the challenge of being a musician, neither a rock star or setting up my own band. That's why I was never interested in learning to play an instrument (1). Nor did I imagine, at the beginning of my melomania, that music would be a lasting part of my life, of the few customs I have kept since school years.
The whole process that has ended in what I am now, a non-musician or sound artist as you prefer to label, has happened naturally. Perhaps the context in which I grew up and the training received in the classrooms of the Salesian College have contributed a lot for this. But it's clear that since I was a child it was easy for me to say NO to several things. That natural critical distance in me - one wonders why - is what defined my way of life.
Another important factor in my musical preferences and love for music / sound is the fact that I have always been attracted to benevolent, peaceful and spiritual joy mental and animic states, something that I could even define as real beauty or bliss ( 2) . It's for this reason that I have always given great importance to music and it has been the number one priority in my life. On countless occasions I have felt complete, without the need of anything else, next to the music, the sounds and even the silence. For this - and because of idleness - I never needed to match or have a woman by my side to feel loved, happy or full. I say because of laziness because there were certainly times, in the 1990s, when I would have accepted having a beautiful and voluptuous girlfriend but at the end of the day my druggy and dissipated nature prevented me from beginning with courtship and other rituals. Something I certainly appreciate. After all, I had found Paradise on Earth thanks to music. And I was not willing to let it go just like that.
The most important intention behind my entrance to the universe of sound creation was precisely that: to express / reflect what I had seen / felt within me thanks to the visions and hyper-reality that music provided me since the time when, being only 17, I acceded to the beautiful realm of the sooper kosmos and the visions and I was able to unfold my body, to create worlds with a movement of my mouth, to color atmospheres with every sound that appeared, to swim between stars and fish, between magical layers of sky and sea. I had found something really pure and divine. And as bonus, it would be said, I could be god, to be my own totem (3).
Under these premises it was clear that my existence in the human societal world was going to be too problematic to say the least. And that goes without saying about the sounds or the music that was going to touch me in luck to defend.
I believe that much of my appreciation for sounds so decidedly anticomercial and / or difficult to be marketed in Peru or in any other country is due to the environment in which I grew up: Peru, North Lima, Los Olivos.
In my area, when I grew up there in the 1980s, there were no malls or shopping centers, there were no multiplexes, only a neighborhood cinema later converted into an evangelical church and a local of events for renting. We didn't have cable TV, few had a telephone at home, only a few had access to personal computers, idem with betamax, vhs and other devices. The options that the citizens had to have fun or to seek recreation were counted. Music came to us as one of those precious moments of recreation and brightness for life in a decidedly gray and exhausting environment. As years later a colleague told me, "it is different to walk along the North Pan-American Highway than on Avenida Javier Prado". And it was more (different) then. With this background my inclination for tastes and sounds scarcely commercials, such as ambient, computer music or experimental music, would turn on easily. After all, I came from an environment that was certainly anticomercial or barely commercial in terms of the mainstream and the establishment. "Like attracts like," said the Greeks.
Living in the Northern Cone, and in any other suburb or cone of Lima, means being in contact every day with the ancient Andean and neo-Andean culture. Every day when I'm at home I always see the hills or apus that are everywhere. The music that several of my neighbors listen to is vernacular, ranging from ancient huaynos to the cumbia that is in vogue. At home, my father has been a big fan of the music of the Central Sierra, so these sounds are no strangers to me in the least. On the contrary, I remember with clarity the family gatherings where they used to dance huaynos until no longer could "zapatear" (dance) more. My father tells me that the house where I live was baptized, back in the early 1970s, by the melodies of the renowned harpist Fausto Dolorier, remembered as a friend of my paternal family.
Such effluviums combined with the omnipresence of Andean culture in Lima, make it one of the great influences at the time of sculpting or defining my sonic-experimental aesthetics.
What would not be my surprise, by year 2007, to listen to project researchers Waylla Kepa (4) who using replicas of huacos and pre-Columbian musical instruments transferred with the aid of X-rays achieved during a live performance to sound, only with the contest of such pre-Inca devices, as if they were an orchestra of millennial analog synthesizers. It was sound art from a thousand years ago made in Peru !! The astonishment is greater if we take into account that Waylla Kepa's performance took place just 10 blocks from my home, in the extinct cultural center "Martín Olivos". What an epiphany.
It is symptomatic that in our own country projects like Waylla Kepa are ignored by the general public, even by those interested in alternatives to the mainstream. Not to mention the rest of the world. Sound Art and Noise had their origin in the Andes, in Peru thousands of years ago? What I heard that night, thanks to Waylla Kepa, could be part of records like Morton Subotnick's "Silver Apples of the Moon" or Stockhausen's more electronic works. History is written by the powers in turn and so it is hoped that the most original expressions of our ancestors will be thrown into oblivion.
"I'm from the eternal home / where you will go with me / I know how much illusion there is / I know that it must feel dizzy / come and try the eternal / let's go home already. You'll see nymphs and archangels / woods of stars and water / snow globes honey / you'll see the sea sky / come on follow my tail / let's go home already. "
Avalonia - "Suave Almanecer"
The days and their nights pass, the generations succeed and everything remains the same. The snake bites its tail with a sneer at the human comedy. A black and pathetic irony. "As above is below," says the mystic. But if you wish, there may be no up or down. Neither comedy nor tragedy. Only what you and your lusty dreamy and metamusical mind wants. The cosmos expresses itself in unexpected ways and if you have come here it is because deep into you you know it. Every treatment that does not elevate, let down (5).
Have not you had sex with the Sun yet?
