UMMAGMA: Kings of Pop
In the past
few days, after not hearing them for several years, I have been listening to
some real pop gems that I grew up on – like "Real Life" by Simple
Minds, "Ink" by The Fixx, and "Achtung Baby" by U2 and I
guess you could say that a metaphysical force drew something else that is
priceless into my hands -or into my inbox, to be more precise – the double album
debut by the a band that took form between Ukraine and Canada. This band is Ummagma.
The music Shauna McLarnon (Canada) and
Alexx Kretov (Ukraine) make could be described as modern pop, though someone may
also recall the label “modern rock”. However, what can be said here is that, the
way their songs/hits develop seem to hint at or glimmer like geniuses such as
Bowery Electric, Brian Eno, and Michael Brook, among others. Ummagma is definitely
not a traditional pop band; they are more likely following along the path of various
other projects, including The Ecstasy of St. Theresa, who, like them, also have
their roots in the less mainstream side of Europe.
Having listened to their two discs “Antigravity”
and “Ummagma”, both of which they released simultaneously in 2012, it seems that
this McLarnon/Kretov duo have also been called on to bequeath gems of pop music
to history – gems that hopefully will rescue it from the backward state and
stagnation that has characterized the world of pop music for the past few
years. Judging from the fact that the music industry and the mass media are not
the same as they were a few decades ago, one would think that the future of Ummagma might be uncertain. However,
in terms of genuine music lovers and audiophiles, their songs are already freely
available for all to enjoy and come highly recommended!
